Philosophy and approach

My philosophy and approach to counseling is quite eclectic. I start from a cognitive behavioral approach to counseling. This approach focuses on the idea that your environment determines your behavior. How a person responds to a given situation is the result of past learning, and usually behavior that has been reinforced in the past. This approach helps people learn how to modify behaviors and/or reactions they are not happy with. I also utilize Dialectal Behavior Therapy interventions for coping skills, distress tolerance, mindfulness, and interpersonal connections. Ultimately, I also weave in a strengths-based approach focusing on the positive attributes instead of negative ones.

I offer a 50 minute individual counseling session as well as a somatic counseling option. Somatic counseling taps into the idea that things aren’t only stored in your mind, but your body as well. With somatic counseling there will be an initial intake process to determine if you are a good candidate.

Somatic therapies were created to help trauma survivors get the opportunity to experience relief from their trauma symptoms. Somatically trained therapists use interventions to help calm their clients’ nervous system, and create more ease in the healing process. As a licensed massage therapist the last 15 years I have found how closely the body and mind are intertwined. I hope to help people suffering from PTSD, anxiety, depression, and more through mind body awareness.

I am not accepting insurance at this time but do offer a reasonable rate as well as a sliding scale in some cases.
